Aaruush 09

The SRM University’s annual technical fest – “Aaruush” was held from 9th-12th September, 2009 at SRM University, Kattankulathur campus. The fest this year was special as it commemorated the 25 glorious years of the completion of SRM University. The fest was backed up by the strong support of sponsors – Pepsi Nimbooz, Indian Bank, Beatrix Solutions, Lanson Toyota, Acer, Inox, CADD Centre – Tambaram, Nescafe, Sun Microsystems, Word Press, e-Pronto, ILUGC, Study in Holland, Mozilla Firefox, Oxford Book Store, Education Plus, Allahabad Bank, Dinamalar and NDTV Hindu and Radio Mirchi as media partners. The fest was officially inaugurated by Shri Suranjan Pal, Director of the Directorate of Public Interface at DRDO headquarters on 9th September, 2009. The same day also saw the Laser Show which was held at the T. P. Ganesan Auditorium attracting over 2000 students. The events of Aaruush 2009 were classified into seven categories – Robogyan, Yuddhame, Presentatio, Blue Book, X-Zone, Konstruction and Magefficie. Robogyan with its challenges, Yuddhame as the ultimate battle of technical geeks, Magefficie as a test of techno – management skills, Konstruction as an ultimate engineering challenge, Blue-book for the biological prodigies and X – zone with its excitement saw participation of over 5000 students and prizes worth 2.5 million rupees were won. Apart from these, there were online events which were open to all . Apart from the paper presentations and robotic events this year, Aaruush had events like Aerogamy, Hybridomia, Spotlight, Dalal Bull, Youth Parliament, Techies and Clash of Titans. There was also an Acer Main Quiz in which the winners received two laptops from Acer. Further, there was a lecture on ethical hacking by Ankit Phadia which was a stupendous success with the students. The final day ended with the Valedictory function at the Dr. T.P. Ganesan Auditorium in the evening and the Chief Guest of the function was Dr. S. Gomathinayagam, Executive Director (CWET), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources, Chennai. Certificates and Prizes were distributed by the Chief Guest. The certificates were authenticated by the ISTE and IEEE, the latter celebrating its 125 years. The team which had been working day and night for months under the leadership of Manish Kumar Singh, secretary Aaruush 2009, can proudly say that Aaruush 2009 was a success and it has set a high pedestal for the coming years.

Honour for SRM Chancellor

Chennai, Feb 20 : SRM University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu was conferred with a doctorate degree by the Birmingham City University.

A SRM University release here today said Mr Pachamuthu was conferred the honour yesterday by the Faculty of Technology, Engineering and Environment, Birmingham City University in recognition of the excellent work rendered by him in the field of Engineering and Technology Education.

The BCU, in its citation, detailed the 'extraordinary work' done by Mr Pachamuthu and his family in bringing education closer to the people of India.

In his acceptance speech, a delighted Mr Pachamuthu said he was greatly honoured by the conferrement of the Doctorate and said it was a honour for the SRM University. Stressing on the need for multi-dimensional curriculam, Mr Pachamuthu said the curriculam should be split to meet needs of the modern day.

He said 50 per cent of the time should be allocated for reading compulsory subjects, 25 per cent on related electives and the balance 25 per cent on fulfilling the needs of one's passion.

SRM to host Indian Science Congress

Chennai, Mar 15 : SRM University would host the prestigious Indian Science Congress (ISC), customarily inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on January 3 next year.

SRM University won the race to host the January 3-7 event at its campus in suburban Kattankulathur after ISC officials inspected the infrastructure facilities and gave the final nod.

Of the nine universities that had evinced keen interest to host the mega event, SRM was selected after the ISC officials took into consideration various parameters, including facilities to conduct plenary sessions, hostel and housing for delegates.

Talking to reporters here today, SRM University Vice-Chancellor P Sathyanarayanan and ISC President-Elect K C Pandey said more than 7,000 delegates from India and abroad, including Nobel Laureates, eminent scientists, faculty members and research scholars from different Universities, Institutes and National Laboratories, would participate, explore, understand, analyse and interact on the matters of Science at the 98th edition of ISC which would return to Chennai after a gap of 14 years.

Prof Sathyanarayanan said the event would provide a common platform for the Indian scientists, engineers and technologists of all categories to share their experiences in scientific advancement after the Prime Minister unveiled the government's scientific agenda before the scientific community in his inaugural address.

He said the theme of the event would be 'Quality Education and Excellence in Scientific Research in Indian Universities.'
